On April 8, 1779, Major General Arnold’s carriage rode down Fourth Street, stopping outside the Shippen house. Esau rode with him, assisting the limping general from the carriage and up the house steps. Arnold wore the blue uniform as befitting his rank. His sister Hannah and his sons were also in attendance, as was one other aide, Major Clarkson. Throughout the brief ceremony, Arnold leaned on Clarkson’s arm, still unable to stand for any length of time on his left leg.

The bride was beyond beautiful. Her initial presence so stunned the general, it brought tears to the veteran soldier’s eyes. During the ceremony, Mercy stood beside Esau, her arm linked in his. He took it as an unspoken admission that in her heart she knew that someday they, too, would stand before a minister and get married.

For three days following the wedding, General and Mrs. Arnold greeted scores of guests at the Shippen home. Then they traveled the short mile to Penn mansion where they set up housekeeping.
